Shiraz

Shiraz Persian rugs are hand-woven in the city of Shiraz. The patterns are simple and geometric and often feature large diamond medallions. Small animals and plants are often included in the field. Shiraz colors include brown, rust and beige, with navy or black outlines.

History of Shiraz

Persian rug weaving has a long history among the people of the cities, towns, villages and nomadic tribes in the provinces of Fars and Kerman. Some of the region's main rug-weaving centers include the cities of Shiraz and Kerman, the towns of Abadeh and Sirjan and the tribal areas of the Afshar, Qashqai and Gabbeh people.

Strong Kurdish and Turkish weaving influences are visible in the rugs woven in Fars and Kerman. They use the symmetrical Turkish knot and can be very dense, up to 100 knots per square inch. Their foundations are very durable and are made mostly of cotton. Sometimes wool or goat hair is used instead. The pile in Fars and Kerman rugs is woven of fine, lustrous wool harvested from local sheep herds. The weavers use natural vegetable dyes to produce the brightly colored wool used in their rugs. The final products are unique and authentic, hand-woven Persian rugs that take many months to complete.
