Qum
Qum Persian rugs are hand-woven in Qum, a city south of Teheran. Frequently woven in pure silk, Qums are among the world’s top-quality rugs. Qum rug styles tend to recreate old and well-known patterns. The best known feature hunting scenes and other pictorials as well as brilliant medallions and borders.
History of Shahreza
The city of Qum is a sacred pilgrimage site for Persians. It became a weaving center in the 20th century and developed a reputation for producing fine, hand-woven silk rugs in a relatively short time.
Due to Qum's late entry into the rug-weaving trade, there are no specific patterns associated with the city. A wide variety of designs—medallions, all-over patterns, hunting scenes and pictorials—are used instead. Qums are made in all shapes and sizes, from rectangular to oval and small to palace-size. They are typically woven of silk, wool and a combination of the two. The weavers of Qum have emerged as masters of the Persian rug-making art and it's common for them to sign their work. The signatures are usually woven directly into the borders of the rugs.
